Pascal Nouvel is Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Universitety of Montpellier. At the end of March and beginning of April he will give three guest lectures at the Department of Philosophy in Bergen on Spinoza. The lectures make up a seminar titled "Renewing Spinoza's thoughts on affects in modern times", which is held in English and offered to BA and MA students in philosophy; it is, however, open to all interested parties! About Pascal Nouvel
"After a PhD in biology at the Pasteur Institute in the laboratory of François Jacob, Pascal Nouvel developed a philosophical thesis on the role of imagination in the scientific creation. Professor of philosophy at the University Paul Valéry Montpellier, he is the author of seven books including the Enquête sur le concept de modèle (PUF), l’Histoire des amphétamines (PUF) and L’art d’aimer la science,( PUF)
He leads the research program on «epistemology of affects»: Seeking to clarify the conditions of possibility of scientific knowledge or way of actual production, epistemology has mostly reflected on the rationality of scientific knowledge.
However, the insistent testimony of scientists themselves shows that the rationality is no longer the only interest they have in their discipline; hence the idea to analyze the science from the point of view of the affects. The program on “epistemology of the affects” develops this approach by starting to question the notion of "passion" and his philosophical history.
