Candidate to the University Board - Group A

Inga Berre

Main content

Based on a strong commitment to the University of Bergen and our sector, I am running for election to the University Board. At UiB, I have been central in building research activity on geothermal energy and mathematical modeling of subsurface deformation. Within these areas, I now lead an ERC project and an interdisciplinary research center. In parallel with research and teaching, I have through professional service nationally and internationally gained experience on advising research policy and research strategic planning. I think this gives me a solid background as a board member.

Building and maintaining strong, independent academic environments is crucial to our ability to achieve the goals we set for research and scholarship. After a long period of closure, support for research and scholarly activity in the academic environments at the departments will be crucial when we again can open the university. Facilitation of time for research, collaboration within the academic environments, international research collaboration, and participation in academic networks must then have a high priority.

Research must be an attractive and good career path, and those we employ at UiB must have the best opportunities to succeed in research and teaching. In the university board, I will work to strengthen recruitment and career development from PhD to professor level, to provide good conditions to conduct research, and to see this in connection with work for equality and diversity.

UiB's strong and broad research profile gives us important roles in national and international research and in scientific advice. I want the university to be open and in dialogue and interaction with its local, national, and international surroundings. Through my own leadership of academic networks, scientific advice, and research strategic work nationally and internationally, I see the value and impact of contributions from university scientists and scholars.

I am a supporter of democratic university governance. When boards, committees and working groups with scholars and employees of different backgrounds and expertise meet and work for the university, we use the knowledge in the organizations to build it further. The way the elected rector receives the mandate from the organization is important for the university's independence. It is also important that the core activity at the university is not managed from above. It is fundamental that the academic communities and the researchers themselves have the freedom to choose the structure of their own research, teaching and dissemination.

Should I be elected as a board member, I look forward to committed and broad engagement with the University of Bergen.
