In December 1995, the General Assembly proclaimed the First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997-2006) and sustained that "Eradicating poverty is an ethical, social, political and economic imperative of humankind". 

This year, a Third United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2018-2027) was launched under the theme "Accelerating global actions for a world without poverty". Poverty eradiction is also top priority for the 193 governments that approved the SDGs. A specific target of the United Nation's SDG #1 is to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030.
