Guest lecture I: German Musicology and the Reception of Edvard Grieg 1930–50
Michael Custodis examines how the status and image of Edvard Grieg changed in the context of an increasingly politicized musicology in Germany during the 1930s, the Third Reich, and the early post-war years.
German Musicology and the Reception of Edvard Grieg, 1930-50
The academic attention for Edvard Grieg and his music in Germany during the years 1930 to 1950 incorporates both strong traditions and shifting opinions, regarding the history of musicology and German-Norwegian cultural relations. Furthermore the example of Norway's most famous composers shows in unique clarity how music history had to face total indoctrination of culture with the advent of Nordic race ideologies and the Third Reich. The seminar will reconstruct this interplay of musical, political and cultural aspects in two chapters, first with a summary of the history of European musicology, to apply it afterwards to the German perception of Edvard Grieg from the Weimar Republic to the early postwar years.
Prof. Michael Custodis, Universität Münster, is affiliated with the Centre for Grieg Research as guest scholar during fall 2017. His lecture is part of the musicology program at the University of Bergen.
Custodis is the leader of the three-year research project 'Nordic Music Politics - The German Dominance of Music in Norway 1930–45', funded by the German Research Council (DFG).
The DFG-project group participates also in an international cooperation project between Universität Münster and Centre for Grieg Research: 'Transforming the Nordic - Music and Politics in Norway 1930–45'.
