How does satellite imagery change journalism during the pandemic?  What can technical experts do with deepfakes during elections? And how should we best prepare the students to deal with the technologies we don´t know yet?

Welcome to Visual Futures of the Media January 19, 2021! We invite you to discuss the value of anticipating ahead and experience the opportunities and risks of emerging technologies in the news media. The conference will provide future scenarios on satellites and climate surveillance from above, and on the unexpected consequences of the many cameras on the road.

Instead of focusing on the users of deepfake technologies, we question what technical experts can do to mitigate harm in society – on the last day before a new presidential inauguration. The learning outcomes of innovation pedagogy in media education will be debated as well, in tandem with forecasting virtual reality as a new meta medium.

The scenarios are based on comprehensive new research and will be framed by suggestive scenario videos by TV students. Each visionary session is followed by a short interactive panel discussion with leading researchers and media professionals. In this open, online conference you are invited to participate with questions as well!

The panels will be moderated by the editor of broenxyz.com, Hilde Sandvik. Conference host is professor Øyvind Vågnes, and the conference is facilitated by NCEMedia and the ViSmedia Project, Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen.

The event is funded by the Research Council of Norway and is carried out in accordance with the framework for responsible research and innovation (RRI) under the research program SAMANSVAR. This is the last conference in a series of five.
