The artifical materials of medicine and dentistry. Biomaterials are materials intended to interface with biological systems to evaluate, treat, augment, or replace any tissue, organ, or function of the body.

Biomaterials – synthetic or biologic materials – is an inter- and cross-disciplinary research field. Biomaterials is a research cluster based at the Department of Clinical Dentistry. The activities involve departments at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, other faculties, and external partners such as The University Dental Clinic and Haukeland University Hospital. The biomaterial activities encompass basic research and clinical studies on properties and responses to clinical biomaterials.
