We have for many years had two main pillars in the research: Ultrasound and functional gastrointestinal disorders. The combination of these two research fields has proven high originality, high international impact and two National Centres of Excellence.

Professor Odd Helge Gilja is leader of the gastro, nephro and nutrition section, and the gastro group.

Associate Professor Kim Nylund is responsible for teaching.

The Gastro group consists of five different research groups:

  • Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Ultrasound
  • Pancreas
    • Leader: Senior Consultant Trond Engjom is affiliated ved K1 under the leadership of Professor Anders Molven

  • Liver

  • GI Neuroendocrinology
    • Leader: Professor Magdy El-Salhy

Also affiliated with the division are:

Professor Roald Flesland Havre and his research group BRAGE.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders present a significant disease group. Research on functional dyspepsia, reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) including post-infectious gastrointestinal disorders after Giardia infection, has a long tradition in our unit, lately also in collaboration with the Bergen Giardia Research Group.

The extensive ultrasound research takes place in close collaboration with the National Centre for Ultrasound in Gastroenterology (NCUG) at the Department of Medicine, Haukeland University Hospital, and was established in 2001.

International partners have been/are located in Seattle (UoW), Adelaide (AU), Bologna (UB), Copenhagen (Herlev), Gothenburg (Sahlgrenska), Nantes, Aalborg/Aarhus and Vienna (TU).
