2023 marks the 150 years anniversary of the discovery of leprosy bacillus. To commemorate this, the University of Bergen, in collaboration with Sasakawa Health Foundation, is proud to host an official anniversary conference in Bergen Norway, 20-22. June 2023.

Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen (1841–1912)'s discovery of the leprosy bacillus, M. leprae, in 1873 was a watershed moment in the history of leprosy and global health. This was one of the opening acts of the bacteriological revolution in medicine, and the first time a pathogen was identified as the cause for a chronic disease.
2023 marks the 150 years anniversary of the discovery of leprosy bacillus. To commemorate this, the University of Bergen, in collaboration with Sasakawa Health Foundation, is proud to host an official anniversary conference in Bergen Norway, 20-22. June 2023. We hereby invite you to save the date.
What to expect:
The conference will gather global, regional, and national leaders, practitioners, researchers, and persons affected by the disease.
You can expect sessions on the elimination of leprosy; leprosy, stigma, and human rights; social issues and family ties; preserving and communicating the history of leprosy; and ethical and legal aspects. There will also be a cultural side program, and a poster session.
