On 17 December, at an extraordinary board meeting the University Board appointed Kjell Bernstrøm new university director at the University of Bergen (UiB). Bernstrøm has been acting university director since April 2014.

Rector Dag Rune Olsen looks forward to working with the new university director.

“After a good procedure, I am extremely pleased that we now have a new university director in place. Bernstrøm has long experience from and extensive knowledge about the university and the sector. This knowledge and experience will be very useful in current proceedings at the university,” says Rector Olsen.

UiB in a changing university landscape

“I want to express my gratitude for the trust I have been shown and will do my best to make sure that UiB will succeed in the goals we set for the future,” says Kjell Bernstrøm.

The new university director points to the current changes in the university and higher education sector and that his focus will be UiB’s positioning in a changing landscape.

“This autumn, UiB’s two current focus areas have been through an external evaluation process and the follow-up work on these interdisciplinary areas are particularly important in the time ahead. In 2014, we have also started projects related to more efficient administrative services and I look forward to completing this work,” says Bernstrøm.

The evaluation of one of the two focus areas, marine research, was recently published.

Background from university and banking

Before becoming university director, Bernstrøm worked as personnel and finance director at UiB. Previously, he was department director at Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway, and bank manager at DnC Florø.

Bernstrøm also chairs the board of university bookshop Studia AS and was previously chairman of the board at Bergen City Museum (Bryggens Museum) and board member at the Student Welfare Organisation in Bergen (SIB) and the Unifob foundation.

Bernstrøm was educated at the University of Bergen and holds the title cand.polit., majoring in economics.
