The Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the Shanghai ranking, assesses the top 500 universities of the world. The University of Bergen (UiB) is ranked in the block of universities between 201 and 300. UiB has been ranked in this block since 2009, when UiB made a leap from the 301 to 200 top universities.
“We must recognise the fact that we only do reasonably well in this ranking. Some of this we can ascribe to what the Shanghai ranking emphasises, such as Nobel prizes and the natural sciences,” says Dag Rune Olsen, Rector of UiB.
Harvard University tops the ranking. Eight out of the top ten universities are American, two British.
“Rankings such as these can be important, since they give us a certain indication of our international standing,” says Olsen.
Later this autumn, both QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education will publish their rankings of the top universities of the world. These two and the Shanghai ranking are considered the most prestigious in the academic world.
