PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Motivasjon: The Tertiary sediments filling the Viking Graben were sourced both from the Exposed Shetland Platform to the west and the Norwegian mainland to the east. Over the platform areas the sedimentary succession displays a series of clinoform succession which migrated basinward during relative sea level falls. During sea level rise, the locus of sedimentation was shifted landward and widespread shale units dominated the central basin areas.

The topset of the clinoforms are fed by river systems and will generally grade to sea level. The foreset and bottomset of the clinoforms will grade to the basin floor and ultimately die out near the basin axis. The depositional profiles from source to sink will therefore display a record of changing shelf edge positions on eastern and western basin margins and shifting locations of basin axis.

  1. Hypotese (vitenskapelig problem): Observe and analyze changing clinoform geometries in relation to basin physiography, location of basin axis and degree- and stage of basin filling.
