PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Hydrocarbon column height determination is the most significant unknown parameter when hydrocarbon presence in undrilled structures are evaluated. This thesis is a part of the PESTOH (PEtroleum and co2 STOrage students of Hermanrud) group in order to understand what controls the positions of hydrocarbon-water contacts at different places on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The work has had a main focus on identification of leaky areas, which relevance to both CO2 storage and hydrocarbon exploration. The contact positions are controlled by the structural spillpoint, vertical leakage along faults, lateral fault sealing and pinch-out of individual sand bodies. A set of structures – both water- and hydrocarbon bearing – will be investigated in order to reveal what factors that control the fluid contact positions. Generic relationships between column heights and their controlling factors will be sought for with a basis in the complete suite of structures.
