MASTERPROSJEKT - ENERGI

Stratigraphic controls on deformation in the Shihtiping Tuffs, SE Taiwan

Main content

Project description
Volcaniclastic rocks are an important reservoir rock in geothermal/hydrothermal energy systems. Previous work by UiB and the University of Bordeaux in SE Taiwan have focused on deformation bands in volcaniclastics of the Shihtiping Tuffs, their structure, evolution and impact on subsurface fluid flow. However, a more detailed understanding of the stratigraphic controls on deformation in the Shihtiping Tuffs is currently lacking.

This project aims to address this knowledge gaps, and the main research tasks for the work on the Shihtiping Tuffs are
to:
1) Establish a stratigraphic framework for the Shihtiping Tuffs (close collaboration with sister MSc project focusing on the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Shihtiping Tuffs)
2) Characterise deformation (deformation bands and faults) within the different stratigraphic units
3) Investigate the relationship between deformation and stratigraphic/depositional architecture
4) Constrain the controls of stratal properties (grain size, grain types (mineralogy), grain shapes and porosity) on deformation and (micro)structural style
5) Arrive at a structural-stratigraphic model that incorporates/describes the stratigraphic and structural variability, and the relationship between the two

The work will be largely field-based, but will also involve optical and SEM microscopy, and image-based analysis of
e.g. porosity, grain shape, grain size etc.

The results of this work will contribute towards a better understanding of the interplay between structure and
stratigraphy in volcaniclastic rocks, which may help better understand and characterise reservoir rocks for geothermal
energy exploitation.
