Project description
The seismology group at GEO runs a network of about 40 seismic stations in Norway and has recorded earthquakes with modern equipment for more than 30 years. This project will focus on the seismicity in south-western Norway and will result in a better understanding of the distribution, properties and causes of these earthquakes by applying modern data processing routines. The work will require an understanding of inverse theory, signal processing and computer programming. The hypothesis for the project is that the estimation of fault plane solution for earthquakes in complicated tectonic settings requires 3D velocity models. The work may involve use of 3D ray-tracing techniques and waveform modelling for 1D and 3D models. The results will help to better understand the crustal scale stresses along
the coast of south-western Norway.

Proposed course plan during the master's degree (60 ECTS):
GEOV355, GEOV359, GEOV276, and three more courses depending on background and interest

The project is suitable for students with a geophysics bachelor degree with a mathematical focus. Potential candidates should have taken and passed the following courses (or equivalent): GEOV112, GEOV113, at least one of either GEOV219 or GEOV254

Felt- lab- og analysearbeid:
The candidate will work with earthquake recordings that are obtained by the seismic network operated by GEO.
