How important are dense waters cascading off the East Greenland shelf?

 

Abstract
The interest in the cascade of dense waters off the East Greenland
shelf has recently arisen due to the fact that it may represent an
important alternative pathway for Arctic dense waters south of Denmark
Strait and a key process through which Atlantic and Arctic waters mix.
The limited data available have been suggested that the cascade is
associated with a narrow and energetic current, the East Greenland Spill
Jet.

In this talk we will present different realistic high-resolution (~2-
and 0.5-km) simulations specifically targeting both the cascading
process and the Spill Jet in that region. The simulations compare well
with observations and help shed light on the complex mechanisms involved
in the process. Lagrangian particles are also deployed in the 2-km runs
and show that a significant fraction (about 25%) of the particles moving
downstream in the deep boundary current comes from the shelf and not
directly from the Denmark Strait sill.

At the end of the talk, we will also show the on-going new simulations
which may lead to future collaborations.
