Mites of Atlantic Raised Bogs in Norway (MARB)

Atlantic raised bogs (Nor. ‘Atlantisk høgmyr’) are rare and largely destroyed in Europe, while in Norway they are still relatively intact in many places, albeit strongly threatened.

Although bogs are often mistakenly considered species-poor habitats, pristine bogs that are rich in Sphagnum species are like ‘tropical forests’ supporting high diversity of mites (Acari). Mites are the most abundant and species-rich arthropods in bogs and the second most abundant group of invertebrates, after nematodes. They are represented by three diverse taxonomic groups: Oribatida, which are mostly saprophagous, Mesostigmata, which are mainly predators, and Trombidiformes, which include different feeding groups. Mites from bogs are little known and several groups have not been studied in this habitat before. Bogs also host some other important indicator groups (Coleoptera, Heteroptera, Araneae, microcrustaceans) that are also studied during this project.

The main objective of this project is to study the Oribatida and other mite groups, as well as other arthropods associated with some interesting Sphagnum species (including endangered S. austinii and S. beothuk) in Atlantic raised bogs located in Vestland, Trondelag and Nordland
