Carolina Cavalcante

Associate Professor, Structural Geology and Tectonics

My research has involved collecting structural data, geological mapping and the application of analytical techniques to understand the processes that lead to the building and collapse of mountain ranges, and to strain localization in shear zones. I am particularly interested in investigating deformation in hot orogens, notably the Pan-African-Brazilian system, and in cold orogens, such as the Caledonides. I am using several techniques, such as digital geological mapping (ArcGIS; GIS KIT; Remote Sensing and digital image processing; FieldMove Clino; Google Earth; GeoMapApp; QGIS) and AMS (Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility); and analytical methods, such as EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) for microfabric analysis, and Thermometric methods (Titanium-in-quartz, Titanium-in-zircon and Zr-in-rutile) to estimate temperature.
