Nutrition and pregnancy-related complications and outcomes as they relate to development of chronic hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in women.

  • This project involves the ascertainment of pharmacologically-treated hypertension and T2DM through the Norwegian Prescription Database and risk factor information of women obtained from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway and the well-known MoBa Cohort Study. Research results, thus far, have been presented in Diabetes Care, Journal of American Heart Association, and Journal of Nutrition. Current activities involve MSc students in Clinical Nutrition, a post-doctoral fellow (funded by the Norwegian Women’s Public Health Association) and affiliated with the Center for Research on Heart Disease in Women, and collaborations with investigators at the Institute of Marine Research.

Nutritional risk factors for development of preterm preeclampsia.

  • This research activity is one component of a post-doctoral project (Teresa Haugsgjerd, Ph.D.) and takes a closer look at folic acid supplementation prior to and in early pregnancy and risk of preeclampsia and will fill a major gap in the existing literature.

Men’s (and women’s) cardiometabolic and lifestyle characteristics as they relate to risk of pregnancy-outcomes.

  • This new research activity has received start-up funding from the Norwegian Stillbirth Society and funding for a 3-yr. doctoral student project from Stiftelsen dam.  Studies to date, have only evaluated a few paternal characteristics with limited ability to take into account a wide range of important maternal risk factors. The research utilizes existing health surveys with data linkages to the Medical Birth Registry and represents the most comprehensive research material for evaluating paternal risk factors within the context of maternal health profiles. A key collaborator in this project is colleague, Prof. Kari Klungsøyr, Registry-based Studies of Familial Risk Research Group, IGS, Univ. of Bergen.

Sex differences in risk factors for atrial fibrillation.

  • This research project with funding from and collaborations with the AFIB Network will evaluate sex differences in selected risk factors obtained through Cohort Norway with data linkages to health outcomes using a study design similar to that of the previous CVDNOR Project.

Other research activities:

  • Egeland is also an active collaborator in research projects led by colleagues affiliated with NTNU, Oslo University Hospital, University of Oslo, & University of Bergen.
