The research of Ivar Hordvik is focused on components of the adaptive immune system in fish. A long term goal is to broaden the spectrum of well characterized molecules and develop molecular tools that can be used to study immune responses during experiments with vaccines and pathogens in fish.
After teleost fish made a separate branch on the phylogenetic tree significant differences have been introduced between fish and mammals, both with respect to primary sequence of corresponding molecules, and the introduction of new molecules by gene duplications. An example of this is the evolution of the immunoglobulins: Whereas IgM has been evolutionarily stable and maintained the primordial structure in all jawed vertebrates the IgD gene has been evolutionarily labile and has been subjected to many internal duplications and deletions. A newly discovered gene, encoding an isotype named IgT/IgZ appears to be specific for teleost fish. On the other hand, IgG, IgE, and IgA are isotypes present in mammals, but not in fish.
Several findings the last years have shown that studies of the immune system in fish still offers surprises. It is plausible to assume that improved knowledge on the function and ontogeny of immune components in fish will aid experimental design of future vaccination trials and interpretation of results. Delivery of vaccines across mucosal surfaces of fish would obviously be an advantage and boost the profitability of the aquaculture industry. Development of new reagents for identification of immune cells and for monitoring immune responses is also an issue which has been addressed by vaccine companies as well as many researchers.
