Radiation climate

Local meteorology

In charge of the Radiation Observatory at the roof top of the Geophysical Institute in Bergen. Here we measure both shortwave solar radiation and long-wave atmospheric (terrestrial) radiation We have long time series of radiation values published in Yearbooks and the data are also stored in an international database at the World Radiation Data Center in St. Petersburg.

The data have been used in many scientific projects during the last years, among them the two EU-projects Satel-light and Heliosat3. Most recently. I participated in the Cost-project COST 726 on UV-climatology and long term changes of UV radiation in Europe.

Ongoing projects

In charge of a pilot project on measurements of shortwave radiation (Total og UVB) and long-wave radiation at the EKOFISK platform i the North Sea.
In charge of the web-page Været i Bergen, where the measured meteorological data at the roof-top of the Geophysical Institute and at the mountain Ulriken (640 m.a.s.l.) are visualized.
In charge of mounting a weather station at the island Utsira at the spring 2011. In this project, a web-based visualization of the data is also planned.
Participating in the Network for University Co-operation Tibet - Norway

Finished projects

Participated in the European COST-project COST726 on UV-climatology and changes in the UV radiation in Europe. Here, Bergen was selected as one out of 4 European station for test of models for estimating UV-radiation.

Participated in two EU-projects: Heliosat3 and Satel-light where the objective was to test and further develop methods for estimating surface solar radiation from satellite measurements from Geostationary satellites. In the project Satel-light half hourly solar radiation was produced for Europe for the period 1996-2000, based on satellite data. These data can be downloaded from the web-site Satel-light of the project.

Participated in two projects in the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (SHCP) of the International Energy Agency (IEA): IEA-SHCP Task 17 and IEA-SHCP Task9. Here,the objective was to provide radiation data (measured or modeled) to the solar energy community (architects, area planners, agricultural society etc.)
