My research interests are centered around how marine and terrestrial geological and biological processes interact with each other, and with climate and ice sheets. I focus on the Quaternary time period spanning the past 2.6 million years of Earth history. I work on a wide range of topics including past climate variability and processes centered on the interactions between the oceans and ice sheets. I also study processes related to sedimentary deposits, sedimentology and geochemistry, as well as with geohazards related to sediment stability and sea-bed infrastructure. My research spans a wide range of environments and this has taken me through a full transect: From inland lakes, via fjord environments, the continental shelf and slope, to the deep-sea along the mid ocean spreading ridge.

I am particularly interested in ocean margins as the interphase between the deep-sea and the terrestrial realms. Ocean margins are key locations for the transfer of sediments and nutrients from land to sea. The interaction between the ocean and marine-based ice sheets on the continental shelf is a key factor for our understanding of how the current ice sheets will evolve in a changing climate, and with them global sea-level.

RISES – Quantifying and understanding Rates of Ice Sheet changes

Website: https://rises.w.uib.no

Role: Researcher

Timeframe: 2018-2021

Funding: Centre for Climate Dynamics at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.

Ice sheets are an essential and vulnerable component of the climate system. They respond to climate forcing through interaction with the atmosphere and ocean, often modulated by basal hydrology and topography. In turn, ice sheets affect atmospheric circulation through changes in surface topography and albedo, and ocean circulation through meltwater runoff. RISES specifically address the effect of atmospheric blocking patterns and (related) changes in basal drainage system below the ice on the mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet. We will also study the retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet during the last deglaciation, and use this knowledge as an analogue for likely future retreat of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Ferry-free E39 – Marine geological investigations of landslides and slope stability at E39 fjord crossings

Role: Researcher

Timeframe: 2019-2022

Funding: Norwegian Public Roads Administration

In order to establish safe and reliable foundations for bridge installations at fjord crossings for the ferry-free E39, a basic knowledge of fjord sedimentary deposition processes, landslide frequency and landslide size as well as the geotechnical properties of the upper tens of meters of seabed sediments is needed. The aim for this project is to gain knowledge that can be used to develop a model for exploration and understanding of sediment and slope stability in fjords. This type of model can contribute to more targeted and cost-effective collection of basic data for infrastructure installations in Norwegian fjords.

Project description: Understanding how Earth's climate responds to present and past changes in climate forcing is hampered by the complexity of the global climate system, involving nonlinearity, teleconnections and feedback mechanisms. This makes it difficult to disentangle the drive and response relationships between climate system variables. Knowledge of how climate system processes interact with each other and how this interaction is affected by external forcing is essential in order to understand the causes for abrupt climate change, and how effects from forcing of for example greenhouse gases and orbital variability propagate through the climate system. The INTERACT project seeks to elucidate such interactions between the oceans, the atmosphere and ice sheets occurring in the North Atlantic region and their relation with global climate over a 100 ka time interval that covers both glacial and interglacial climate states. We will achieve this by linking new and previously published high resolution climate proxy records from the Nordic Seas/North Atlantic region that records variability in atmospheric, oceanic and ice sheets, with key global climate parameters such as CO2, orbital variability, sea-level, low latitude hydrology and Southern Hemisphere climate/bipolar see-saw. The drive and response relationships between the climatic factors and processes will be addressed by a novel data analytical technique, Information Transfer (IT) analysis, which is especially developed for non-parametric drive and response attribution in chaotic non-linear systems.
