De Melo holds a master's degree in Development Geography from the University of Oslo, and research experience in the fields of labour, citizenship and sociospatial analyses. His ongoing PhD project involves the political representation of smallholders belonging to different marginalized groups in rural Brazil. The project addresses issues on the matter of access to land, participatory democracy, food security and food sovereignty, agrarian citizenship, intersectionality and agency.
