Mohn Nutrition Research Laboratory (funded by the Trond Mohn foundation 2018-2023) (https://mohnfoundation.no/nutrition-research/?lang=en),

A collaboration between nutritionists, dietitians, medical doctors, and molecular biologists with the aim to study the nutritional challenges of obesity and undernutrition - from the molecular level to clinical and epidemiologic approaches. Nutritional assessment of the participants in the Hordaland Health Studies 3 (HUSK3) is part of the Mohn laboratory. More information aobut HUSK3 can be found here: www.husk.w.uib.no/husk3/

Collaboration with the HUSK consortium is well established, and we investigated specifically the association of dietary intake and different health outcomes, including the metabolic syndrome, bone mineral density and hip fractures. These investigations will be continued by using data from HUSK3 and also extended to weight changes.

Research on seafood

Fish and seafood is a major dietary source of vitamin D, and I have been interested in the health effects of vitamin D both in healthy populations and in patients with cardiovascular disease, and in vitamin D from fish and supplements. Fish is also a rich source of protein, and protein intake is, for example an issue in old adults and in patients with chronic kidney disease. Here, we also have ongoing projects studying the associations of dietary intake in hospitalized patients and patients with CKD with different health outcomes.

Seafood consumption is threatened by pollution, and I am especially interested in the pollution with micro- and nanoplastics. Together with colleagues from environmental toxicology and the Institute of Marine Research, we have received funding from the University of Bergen within the priority area of marine research (https://www.uib.no/en/marine) to study the health effects of microplastics and from the SEAS (Shaping European Research leaders for marine sustainability) programme. CarbHealth (funded by JPI "A healthy diet for a healthy life" 2019-2024)

CarbHealth studies, in 4 different work packages and together with colleagues from Sweden and Germany, health effects of carbohydrates with focus on bread intake, glycemic control and weight changes. In a large, multicentre intervention trial, almost 200 participants have exchanged their bread with specifically produced breads containing either wheat or oat for 16 weeks, with the primary outcome of glycemic indicators.

NutriNOR (National Research School in Nutrition, funded by the Research Council of Norway) (https://www.uib.no/en/rs/nutrinor)

NutriNOR is a national reserch school open for all PhD students in nutrition and food science and has the aim to improve the scientific and professional education of PhD candidates by summer schools, PhD conferences, internships, and leadership training. NutriNOR joins more than 20 partners and includes about 50 PhD candidates.
