Morten Birkeland Nielsen has a PhD from the University of Bergen (2009), and a Master degree (Cand.polit) in psychology from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (2003).

In 2010, Nielsen was chosen as a Highly Commended Award winner of the 2009 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards in the Leadership and Organization Development category.
