Dr. Thorolf Magnesen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Bergen. He has background as a marine zooplankton ecologist and has during the last 20 years been working on several biological and aquaculture aspects of bivalve production. His main expertise is in the hatchery production of great scallop (P. maximus) and in particular the reproduction cycle and larval rearing. He has designed the scallop hatchery and establish broodstock conditioning regimes for several Norwegian scallop populations, and his work has contributed signicantly to the development of scallop aquaculture in Norway. He has been the project leader of several shellfish projects related to hatchery production, natural populations and market projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway, regional county councils and private industry, as well as EU funded research and development. Dr. Magnesen is also administrating a national scallop business development network “Sea-ranching of the great scallop” in Norway. Dr. Magensen has previously supervised a number of Bachelor, Master and PhD candidates.
