The Bergen COPD Microbiome Study (MikroKOLS)

The study aims to characterize the airways microbiome in patients with COPD, compared with healthy adults.

Secondary motives are to assess different bronchoscopic sampling techniques, to compare the microbiome within the lungs (upper versus lower airways, left versus right lung), and to study the impact of tobacco smoking and mody composition on the airways microbiome.

The pilot study was performed spring of 2012, data collection is well underway, and will be finalized by Summer of 2015.

Metagenomic sequencing is performed on the Illumina MiSeq platform.

The lung microbiome in interstitial lung disease Study (MikroILS)

This is an extension of the MikroKOLS study, where we aim to characterize the airways microbiome in patients undergoing evaluation for interstitial lung diseases. The first patient was included in December 2014, planned project period is until end of 2016.

The Bergen GeneCOPD follow-up study (GenKOLS oppfølgingen)

The first Bergen GeneCOPD study was performed in 2002/04, where 500 COPD patients and healthy controls were assessed with a CT scan, lung function testing and clinical data, and genewide assosiation studies were performed. In 2014 the follow-up started, aiming to include 250 patients and 400 controls. Primaty study question is the assessment of longitudinal change in COPD assessed by CT thorax, secondary motive is to assess risk factors for comorbid coronary heart disease.

The Bergen COPD Cohort Study (BergenKOLS)

The study started in 2006, and ended in 2014. More than 400 COPD patients and 300 healthy controls were included, and most were attempted followed until the end of 2014, with annual clinical examinations.

The main research question was to search for predictors of later advers outcomes such as mortality, exacerbation frequency, development of cachexia and lung function decline. Several papers are already published, and several more are underway.
