Partnership between Norway and Japan for excellent Education and Research in Weather and Climate Dynamics (NORPAN)

After the NORPAN closing workshop held in Hakone in Japan, Fumiaki Ogawa from BCCR visited Prof. Hisashi Nakamura and his group in RCAST for 3 weeks (16 Feb. to 9 March) through the support by NORPAN project.

He had discussions about wide range of subjects: (i) Bias of SST, stormtrack and jets in the PRIMAVERA high resolution air-sea coupled simulations, (ii) Arctic regional climate change and role of Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation using AGCM, reanalysis, observation and CMIP5 data, (iii) Representation of AO/NAO in the NorCPM reanalyses, (iv) Wind direction during the air-sea fluxes in the extratropics using ERA-Interim reanalysis, (v) Barotropic Annular Mode (conventional annular mode) and the role of waves for its transition between the different polarities using aqua-planet AGCM, and (vi) Baroclinic annular mode using aqua-planet AGCM and JRA55 reanalysis.

Apart from fruitful discussions with various scientists, he also gave talks at RCAST and JAMSTEC, where he received a lot of constructive comments for future progress. In addition, he joined weekly group meetings of Hisashi Nakamura.

Fumiaki is thankful to the support by NORPAN to have this great opportunity to work in Japan. It was overall exceptionally fruitful time for the progress of the subjects which he is working on.
