Centre for Geobiology

The Centre for Geobiology in Bergen’s primary research focus will be the extreme environments found in the deep seafloor, the deep biosphere and remnants of ancient crust, which were formed in deep time.

The Centre will integrate geologists, geochemists, microbiologists and molecular biologists to study life in extreme environments, early earth and the roots of life.

Research themes will include deep seafloor geodynamics, water-rock-microbe interactions, the deep biosphere , vent, seep and fall biota, the roots of life, and early earth and biosignatures.

The Centre aims to be a central hub for international research and research training, undertaking integrated interdisciplinary studies to generate new, fundamental knowledge about the interactions between the geo- and bio-sphere. New methodologies will be developed to search for signs of early life on Earth and life on other planets.
