As the world faces a never ending list of pressing issues, disasters and insecurities, China’s economic and political muscles are expanding. In this seminar we focus on China’s interests and how it acts on the global stage. In particular, we discuss environmental and climate change issues, for which China is both key to the problem and the solution. We ask whether China’s recent embrace of the Paris Agreement and other international commitments may be broken, now that the USA seems to be changing course.

Hans Jørgen Gåsemyr is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Comparative Politics, University of Bergen. Gåsemyr specializes in Chinese politics and society and international politics and is also a part of the project “Sino-Nordic Dialogues” at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI).

Iselin Stensdal is a research fellow at the Fritjof Nansen Institute and the director of FNIs Global Programme. Stensdal specializes in Chinese environmental and climate policy, social and political consequences of pollution/environmental degradation in China, Chinese energy security policy and Asian interests in the Artic.
