Principal understanding, also deep time

The group has a fast annual mean global biogeochemical model available which also can be used for principal studies on ocean biogeochemical functioning over 100,000 to million years both in the past and also for “deep time in future”.

Biogeochemical models can be used for past, present and future scenarios.

The model includes interactive sediment which is fully equilibrated with the water column. The model has been used also for sediment core simulations. In principle, this tool opens the possibility for a direct combination with measured paleo-climatic data from the geologic record. This can also be combined with the improved understanding of the processes leading to variations in the distribution of trace elements and their isotopes that are used as proxies for the state of the ocean in past times. The group has, in combination with personnel at the Department of Earth Sciences, particular expertise on the distribution of stable oxygen and carbon isotopes that can be used to infer changes in ocean circulation. We envision a significant effort on developing the field of observation-model comparison in the coming years.
