Is mackerel prey size selectively on herring larvae of inferior growth or not?

My name is Nishat Anjum. As part of my masters studies in fisheries biology and management, I am conducting research on mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and its predation on herring larvae (Clupea harengus) on the Norwegian Coastal shelf. I want to detect whether mackerel prey size selectively on herring larvae of inferior growth or not. To answer this question, I will use otoliths to compare the growth of herring larvae in the surrounding environment with those that have been consumed by mackerel. Herring is commercially important species and it is therefore important to know if the overlapping distribution of mackerel and herring affects the abundance of herring. The supervisors for my thesis are Prof. Arne Johannessen and Prof. Arild Folkvord from the University of Bergen and Dr. Erling Kåre Stenevik from the Institute of Marine Research. I am studying fisheries because of my interest in fisheries resource conservation and belief that the marine ecosystem can be a valuable resource now and in the future.
