Submissions for the 1st Conference on Positive Youth Development in a Cross-national Perspective

We invite submissions for the 1st Conference on Positive Youth Development in a Cross-national Perspective “Bridging Research & Practice Cross-Nationally: A PYD Approach to Social Justice”, to be held virtually on April 22 – 23, 2022. Pre-conference events will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2022. We encourage submissions from researchers, interveners and policy makers at all career stages including graduate and undergraduate students.

Main content

The conference focuses on the cross-national and global facets of PYD research and intervention, and how the PYD framework can inform and promote social justice in a rapidly evolving and socially polarized world, shattered by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing inequalities. The conference represents an opportunity to bring together experts who work within a PYD framework in terms of research/assessment and intervention/policy making, with the aim of bridging research and practice to contribute to the building of a more just society for young people and for all.

Submissions are welcome on:

  • PYD, equity, diversity and inclusion
  • PYD and social justice
  • PYD and the virtual world (social media, internet)
  • PYD and education
  • PYD and climate change
  • PYD and COVID-19
  • Cross-national PYD research and assessment

Abstracts must be submitted and presented in English. Abstract length is 250-300 words

The number of submissions is limited to two as first/presenting author. There are no limits for the presentations that one can co-author, and no limits for the roles of discussant and symposium chair.

At least one presenting author for each accepted submission must be registered for the conference.

Submission types:

1. Individual flash-talk paper/poster presentation. Individual flash talk papers are freestanding research presentations. A flash talk is a 5-minute presentation highlighting the key attributes of a research study and may include 2-to-3 slides or a poster that will be shared online on the conference website and freely accessible to registered participants. Six-to-eight individual flash talks that are thematically related will be included in one flash talk session with an assigned moderator engaging the audience in discussion.
Individual flash talk papers will be presented in 90-minute sessions.

2. Individual papers. Individual papers are freestanding research presentations and consist of 15-minute presentations of research or intervention initiatives that cannot be presented as individual flash-talks. Four-to-five individual papers can be grouped together based on common themes to be included in one individual paper session with an assigned moderator engaging the audience in discussion.
Individual paper sessions will be presented in 90-minute sessions.

3. Paper Symposium. A cohesive cluster of presentations focused on a specific topic. In the traditional format, the chair briefly presents the theme of the symposium, presenters speak for 15 minutes each, and a discussant provides an overview. At least 15 minutes MUST be set aside for audience discussion. Requirements: 1 chair, 3 presentations plus 1 discussant or 4 presentations.
Total time allotted to a session: 90 minutes.

4. Conversation Roundtable. This format is intended as a forum for a discussion of overarching questions/issues, not for presentation of specific research findings. The roundtable is an engaging conversation among two-to-four scholars/professionals and the audience about ideas, methods, or professional-, intervention- and research-related experiences. A conversation roundtable must have representation from multiple institutions and actors. A central question or theme should serve as a focus for the roundtable. The broader purpose of a roundtable is to encourage networking among individuals or groups who may benefit from shared experiences or from hearing different views on a topic. The audience must be given 30 minutes to respond to the questions and issues raised and to introduce additional questions and comments to the panel. Conversation Roundtables do not include PowerPoint slides or other audio-visual equipment.
Total time allotted to a session: 90 minutes.
