Eco-Lighthouse at Sars
What has Sars got to do with lighthouses?
In 2015 the University of Bergen received its Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) certificate, and with it also the Sars Centre became an Eco-Lighthouse institute. The Eco-Lighthouse is a certificate for environmental conscious organizations and businesses. It implies a constant commitment to improve and take actions to reduce its impact on the environment. At the Sars Centre we founded an environment committee in 2016 where we discuss environmental problems, come up with ideas to mitigate our impact, and try to implement those solutions. So far, we have replaced single use plates and cutlery from social gatherings and facilitated recycling in all common areas. Other measures for our everyday routines at the Sars Centre are for example to reduce packaging and plastic waste, recycle as much as possible, and motivate everyone to cycle or take public transport instead of coming by car. We also try to save energy when possible, find environmentally friendly alternatives in the laboratory, and use electric cars for field trips. Our goal is to rise environmental awareness, reduce our impact, and to help UiB on its way to become a greener University.
