Cooperation and partnerships
SDG Bergen is a strategic initiative by the University of Bergen to build cooperation and partnerships for a sustainable future.
Cooperation with international partners is in the DNA of the University of Bergen (UiB). For decades UiB has referred to itself as “the international university” and “the global university”. Our diversity is our strength, and with the SDG Bergen initiative this commitment spanning the globe is converging into an engagement with the UN's 2030 Agenda.
For many years UiB has held partnerships in all continents and has been a dedicated member of international networks such as the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) and the International Association of Universities (IAU). Add to that our extensive cooperation directly with partner institutions in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific.
SDG Bergen aims to build on these partnerships and enable the networks we are part of and our cooperation with partners to create innovative channels for science diplomacy.
One example of this is the UN Ocean Conference 2017, where UiB and partners in the South Pacific and South Africa made voluntary commitments as part of our shared goal to contribute with our research and knowledge to maintain a sustainable ocean. Since then UiB has established both the SDG Bergen initiative and the Ocean Sustainability Bergen centre, the latter in particular focussed on SDG14: Life below water. The University of Bergen is the SDG14 Hub for United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and leads the IAU SDG14 Team.
