Various lectures Friday 10 August

Main content

UiB offers three different lectures during the Welcome Programme Friday 10 August 10:00 - 12:15.

You can choose TWO of the following lectures made especially for the new international students.

  • Norway for Dummies – introduction to Norway

How has geography, topography and climate influenced present ‘Norwegianess’? Have living in the periphery of Europe, in an maritime environment in cold and bad weather shaped the mentality of Norwegians? It is hard to give exact answers. However, looking into the issue gives an insight in Norwegian past and present.
By Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde, professor at the faculty of Law.

  • Meeting the locals

The ultimate survival guide to Norway and tips on how to talk to Norwegians! Students also get to taste traditional Norwegian food during this lecture filled with fun facts.
By Berit Chr. Nestås & Ingvill Skjold-Thorkildsen, Sammen Counselling & Career.

  • The fjords, the sea, the rain and the surplus of energy

The fjords, the rain and the seas characterize Western Norway. The Gulf Stream gives us the mild climate and the westerlies give us a surplus of rain and hydropower. The seas give us fish, petroleum, international connections and a large maritime industry. It is thus natural that “Marine research” and “Climate and energy transitions” are two of the three committed strategic areas at UiB.
By Kristin Guldbrandsen Frøysa, dr. scient.
