Extend your study period

Exchange students at the University of Bergen can apply to extend their study period with one semester.The exchange period is limited to maximum one academic year (two semester). This applies regardless of whether there were two non-contiguous periods.
Extension must be included in the total number of nominated students.
Deadline for the spring semester 2024 is 15 October*.
* No extension will be given beyond this deadline.
Conditions:
- Be an exchange student in the following categories: Bilateral, EEA/Norway grants, Erasmus+, Nordplus.
- The extension must be included in the total number of nominated students. This is specially important for admission to restricted courses.*
- Have an approval letter from home university confirming your extension within the above mentioned categories**
- Register an online application within the deadline.
- The exchange period at the University of Bergen does not exceed two semesters altogether.
- Extension is subjected to courses availability and overall study progress: Students must carry a semester workload of 30 credits to maintain full-time status.
- Competence development within relevant field of study should be the main purpose for extension.
- Students will be informed by 1 July/10 December of the outcome of their application.
*Please note that applications for extension must be include in the total number of nominated students. If the number of nominations exceed the number of students/places agreed between our institutions, we will request the student’s home institution to prioritize their students. If priority is given to new students, application for extension will be denied.
*We do not accept Free-movers.
Application deadlines:
- Autumn semester: 1 June*
- Spring semester: 15 October*
* No extension will be given beyond this deadline.
Please observe that the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) have different deadlines.
Period for application:
You can apply for an extension in these periods:
Autumn semester: 1 May to 1 June.
Spring semester: 15 September to 15 October.
Documentation must be uploaded with the deadline.
*Applications for extension cannot be processed earlier and are subjected to availability and study progress. Please observe the deadlines!
How to apply/documentation requirements:
- Find courses (max. 4) you plan to take in the course list for exchange student*
- Obtain a written official confirmation from your home university, in which they approve the extention period at the University of Bergen. Please note that extension must be included in the total number of nominated students. This is specially important for admission to restricted courses at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
- Apply online for the extension and upload the confirmation from your home university.
Application for extension to take Norwegian courses, will not be processed. Norwegian courses are given in addition to degree courses and cannot form the basis of the student stay at UIB. These courses are given on a first-come first-served policy and therefore, we cannot guarantee admission.
Please note that applications without the official confirmation of extension from home university will not be processed!
If your application is granted an updated letter of extension will be sent by e-mail within 10 December/ 14 July.
