Objectives and content

Bioinformatics is indispensable in modern biology and thus in the understanding of life and development and health and disease. As a consequence, bioinformatics in its supporting and enabling role is of particular value to society. The goals of the program are to educate students in the basics that are necessary to develop bioinformatics methods to biological questions and to lay the foundation for master studies in bioinformatics.

Required Learning Outcomes

On completion of the study programme the candidate will have the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • The student has broad knowledge of the statistical and algorithmic foundations of fundamental methods in bioinformatics
  • The student has broad knowledge of core topics in cell biology and molecular biology
  • The student has advanced knowledge of core methods in machine learningn and bioinformatics

Skills

  • The student is able to reflect on algorithms and their relationship with the biological questions at hand
  • The student is able to design and implement bioinformatics algorithms and methods in alignment with good computer science practice
  • The student can communicate to others the knowledge acquired during the program

General competence

  • The student has a critical and analytical view of thier own work, as well as that of others, and is able to expand their knowledge by themself
  • The student can plan and conduct project work both on their own and in a group
  • The student is able to assess ethical and juridical aspects of their work

Higher Education Entrance Qualification and MATRS.

Recommended previous knowledge

The Bachelor program in bioinformatics assumes that the students have completed a full program in mathematics from high school.

Study period abroad

The programme committee has made adaption for students who want to take parts of the study abroad.

Teaching and learning methods

A combination of teaching methods is used in the various courses, mainly lectures, hands-on laboratory, tutorials. You may find more information in the course description.

Assessment methods

The most common assessment methods are written and oral examination. The assessment methods for each course are described in the course description.

Grading scale

At UiB the grades are given in one of two possible grading scales: passed/failed and A to F.

Access to further studies

Bachelor¿s degrees give admission to a master¿s programme within relevant discipline.

To qualify for a master¿s programme at UiB the average grade for the specialization in the bachelor's degree should be at least C.

Employability

The Bachelor program in bioinformatics assumes that the students have completed a full program in mathematics from high school.

With a degree in Bioinformatics, the candidate will be able to work within the following sectors; research, oil industry, education and public administration, amongst others. With a bachelor's degree in bioinformatics one has a good basis to continue with the Master¿s program in Bioinformatics, and many other areas of study within computer science. If the studies are terminated after completing a bachelor's degree, one¿s knowledge of informatics in another field is the candidate¿s biggest advantage.

Evaluation

The programme will be evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
