Helga Nowotny awarded honorary doctorate
Sociologist Helga Nowotny was 2 October awarded an honorary doctorate at University of Bergen
Four new honorary doctorates are awarded at University of Bergen. Among these is sociologist Helga Nowotny. An honorary doctorate is awarded for significant contributions or outstanding work to the benefit of science. Helga Nowotny holds a doctorate in sociology from Columbia University, New York and a doctorate in law from Universtiy of Vienna.
Her work in the 1970s and 1980s includes topics such as scientific controversies and technological risks, time as social construct and coping with uncertainty and gender relations in science. In 1989 Nowotny published the book Eigenzei (English title: Time: The Modern and Postmodern Experience) which has become a classic within sociology and the study of time.
Throughout her career professor Nowotny has always been intensely engaged in research policy. She is one of the founding members of the European Research Council and has served as the President of ERC. University of Bergen has been honoured to experience professor Nowotny’s competence through her position as member of the Holberg Committee in the years 2008 to 2014.
The award of the honorary doctorate to Helga Nowotny shows the important role of sociology and social sciences in understanding the complexity of the modern society and in building institutions to stimulate science of high academic quality.
