It studies how scientists can work with communities to jointly produce climate information specific to particular places, and local activities. The project works to transform general ‘climate science’ into ‘climate products and services’ that help communities understand local climate variability and change, and plan for the places they live.To this end, Co-cli-serv buildd close working relationships between climate scientists and local communities in five places across NW Europe; (i) Bergen, Norway; (ii) Brest, France; (iii) Golf de Morbihan, France; (iv) Dordrecht, the Netherlands; and (v) the Wadden Sea, Germany. The goal is to engage a range of people in these communities toward co-constructing climate information; from local government, to sectors like the Tourism industry, non-governmental organisations or professional sectors.

Co-cli-serv’s approach starts from mapping the stories that people tell of weather and change in a place. The aim is to enmesh scientific narratives of climatic change with local narratives, for the science to make sense and matter for communities. From the stories, scientists and community people will together develop possible future climate scenarios for their place, which they will use to identify their climate information needs. This means looking at what climate science and other weather knowledge is available for a place now, what needs to be collected, and appraising this information’s quality for helping communities adapt.
