MODELLING OF ILLUMINATION AND RESOLUTION EFFECTS IN PRESTACK DEPTH MIGRATION

Two main classes dominate for modelling of 2-3D geological structures, i.e., full waveform methods (e.g., finite-difference) or ray-based methods, both having their advantages and drawbacks. However, in some applications, using these methods may be difficult and/or costly. Therefore, many geoscientists use instead a far more simplistic modelling called 1D convolution modelling but such a method can only, at best, model vertical resolution effects.
The aim of the study is to systematically investigate the potentialities of an extended ray-based 2(3)D convolution modelling and use it to document the consequences of limited illumination and resolution effects on prestack depth-migrated (PSDM) images.
