Quantification of geological processes in terms of seismic signatures

This project aims to investigate the connection between physical and mechanical properties of sediment and their seismic expression

Hovedinnhold

The depositional conditions and mineral composition of sediment determine to a great extent the mechanical properties of the resulting sedimentary deposit. When buried, the deposits are subject to diagenetic cementation caused by the overburden pressure and increased temperature, which effectively stiffens the sediment, turns it into rock and changes its elastic properties. The present research focuses on the principal mechanisms of sediment stiffening and its corresponding seismic properties. The project is a co-operation between the University of Oslo, Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines and UiB, and is financially supported by Statoil and the Norwegian Research Council.
