New EU Rules for the digital world - What's the common core?
Martin Müller will talk about the whole package of regulations in the digital strategy of the European Commission that tries to replicate the "success" of the GDPR as a world-wide role model for data protection which has been dubbed under the claim of a "Brussels Effect". He will briefly outline some provisions in the areas of platform regulation (DSA/DMA), data regulation (Data Governance Act/Data Act) and AI with the AI Act. His hypothesis is that there is a common core in all of the regulations which is:
a) making fundamental rights binding to (large) private actors and
b) establishing procedures to make the relationship between private actors and users "fairer".
About Martin Müller
Martin received a law degree (master-equivalent) from Goethe University in Frankfurt in 2021 specialising in European and International Law. Before joining the University of Innsbruck in 2022, he worked for the Digital Law Department at a "Big Four" firm. At the University of Innsbruck, he works as researcher for the European Repository of Cyber Incidents, a project funded by both the German and Danish ministries for Foreign Affairs mapping cyber attacks. Moreover, he pursues a PhD degree in law under the preliminary thesis title “Supervisory law of digital platforms”.
