Guest lecture by Karim Benzerara: Iron biomineralization by iron-oxidizing bacteria
Hovedinnhold
Next Thursday Karim Benzerara from the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris (IPGP) and the Institut de Minéralogie et de Physique des Milieux Condensés (IMPMC) will be visiting us. For details about his work, please see his website: http://www.ipgp.fr/pages/1611.php
He will give a seminar on Thursday, 8th of October, 10:15 am in the CGB seminar room on the 4th floor.
The title of his presentation is:
"Iron biomineralization by iron-oxidizing bacteria"
Abstract:
The processes of Fe biomineralization induced by Fe(II) bio-oxidation at neutral pH under anoxic conditions remain poorly understood. I will present here how biominerals can be produced by nitrate-reducing and photosynthetic iron-oxidizing bacteria cultured in the presence of dissolved or solid Fe(II). In that purpose we used a combination of X-ray spectromicroscopy and transmission (cryo-)electron microscopy and detailed the different steps of iron biomineralization. All these findings provide new information to further the understanding of molecular processes involved in iron biomineralization by anaerobic iron-oxidizing bacteria. Finally, I will discuss whether resulting organic-mineral assemblages could be looked for in the geological record and could or could not inform us on their biogenicity.
If you would like to meet Karim on Thursday, please contact Daniel or Mark, and we will fix a time.
