Development of a test battery for measurement of knee function in patients with patellar instability

Recurrent lateral dislocation of patella is a disabling disorder causing pain, reduced level of activity and quality of life for many young people. Etiology is diverse and people experiencing recurrent dislocations are advised to consider surgical treatment. At current, there is a large variation in surgical approaches and limited knowledge on which activities these patients return to. Further, there is a lack of validated outcome measures for this large group of patients - with no validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) for use in the Norwegian Health Care System.

This PhD project aims to 1) develop valid outcome measures to evaluate physical function, activity and quality of life after treatment of patients with recurrent patellar dislocation and 2) explore experiences of living with recurrent patellar instability. Results from the project can help secure evidence-based treatment algorithms and support decision-making regarding safe return to sports (RTS).
