Prosjekt

Biological Factors Associated with Symptom Severity and Health-Related Quality of Life in Men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Abstract

The main objective of this PhD project is to identify biomarkers that can predict symptom severity, unfavorable outcomes, and impact on the quality of life in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

So far, three papers have been completed or are in progress. Paper I demonstrates that the IPSS "bother question" score predicts health-related quality of life better than the total IPSS score. Paper II explores potential biomarkers for moderate to severe LUTS using a metabolomics-based approach and robust statistical methods. Paper III investigates clinical and biochemical predictors of future need for surgical treatment in male LUTS patients.

The plan for completion includes submitting articles 2 and 3 for publication in 2023, finishing study credits in Autumn 2023, writing the thesis from Autumn 2023 to Spring 2024, and defending the thesis in 2024.
