Hovedinnhold

For more than two decades, digital media have played a central role in mediating encounters between Chinese users and audiovisual content. From early video-sharing websites and social media platforms to short video apps and livestreaming services, the personal screens of portable devices are a window into a multitude of vernacular practices and creative communities. This seminar explores the emergence and change of visual cultures on Chinese digital media.

Apertures is a series of seminars organized by the Machine Vision in Everyday Life research project. This one-hour video seminar features fifteen-minute talks by two scholars of Chinese media, followed by a discussion between presenters, the research project team, and the audience.

Paola Voci discusses her books China on Video: Smaller Screen Realities (Routledge, 2012) and Screening China’s Soft Power (Routledge, 2019), contextualizing different genres of digital video content through the vernacular creative practices that sustain them. Voci is Professor in Chinese and Asian Studies and Global Studies Director at the University of Otago.

Yiyi Yin reflects on recent developments of fan culture on Chinese digital platforms. Drawing on her recent article An emergent algorithmic culture: The data-ization of online fandom in China and ongoing research, she traces the roles of infrastructural affordances and algorithmic systems that shape the labor of Chinese fan communities. Yin is an Assistant Professor at Beijing Normal University.
