Meet the BetterAge partners

18 companies and several research institutions are participating in the SFI BetterAge. Let us introduce them to you.

The range between the 18 companies is large. Some deal with insurance and mortgages, others with cognitive and physical training. Common to all companies is that they work to create good solutions for the elderly. Specifically, it may apply to better-adapted housing or the use of sensor technology in the home.

“It is fantastic to be able to bring together so many competent companies and people, to work together on a common main goal. Together we can develop new solutions that will be crucial to ensure a good old age for the elderly in the future,” says Bettina Husebø, leader of the SFI BetterAge and professor at the University of Bergen.

The business partners 

Attensi works with research and development on mental training and education with simulation software for healthcare workers. They have created more than 200 different games. More than 70 countries and multiple languages use the games. 

Tidewave R&D develops smart turning mattress. The mattress offer the user the possibility to stay at home longer, reducing pressure ulcers, avoid stiffness and disturbed sleep. 

Motitech  has developed an easy-to-use motivational tool that stimulates elderly and people with dementia to physical and cognitive activity. They use an exercise bike, video and sound, through familiar surroundings and childhood memories. 

Friskus  is a platform provider and social entrepreneur that wants to simplify voluntary, social activities to decrease loneliness, making people feel valuable. Friskus is established in 20 Norwegian municipalities. 

Jodacare is a digital communication platform to connecting formal and informal carers through a user-friendly and secure service. The users will save time spent on phone calls or misunderstandings with increased dignify care. 

Nyby provides a platform to organise and mobilise new resources for important tasks across departments, silos and among citizens. Adopted by more than 40 municipalities in Norway and Sweden. 

Hold fast! Samuel Massie is a well-known TV star with unique expertise due to intergenerational friendship and communication between people at all ages, demonstration their resources and connection to the youth. 

Brain+ ApS  is a danish platform technology for cognitive training and behavioural health, early detection, risk reduction, prevention, treatment and disease management. The company is connected to two major EU projects. 

Lifekeys is a digital mental health solution with over 20 psychologists in two countries to increase people’s quality of life. Aims to support older adults and people with mild cognitive impairment. 

VISDOK provides VR-glasses with 360-video and relaxing music as a therapeutic meditative tool and to increase physical and mental activities addressed older adults and people with dementia. 

Youwell is a Cloud-based Microsoft Azure data platform enabling scientists to build training, treatment and rehabilitation programs in real-time and connecting patient and therapist. Collecting data by body sensors. 

Atea  is the market leader in IT infrastructure in Northern Europe, and provides solutions that fuse technology, creativity and values. 

Snøhetta & Medvita - Snøhetta  is an international renowned, award-winning architecture and designer office. Together with Medvita, the aim to take a position as a national leading housing developer in health and care sector for elderly. 2-3 pilot villages are scheduled in 2020/2021. 

BOB is the largest building provider at the Western part of Norway. Aims to provide housing that improves quality of life for elderly with specific needs, supporting independence and life choices. Currently, an underserved area despite demographics.  

KLP  is the largest pension company in Norway with 900.000 members, most of them work in health care. KLP aims to communicate how to take good health choices from childhood and during life, profesionallly/familiy life. 

GC Rieber established Helgetun AS. Helgetun is a non-profit company established with the purpose of developing a novel holistic housing for elderly to support active ageing and to test AT and sensor technology by mixed-method approach. 

Husbanken  is owned by the Norwegian state and finances public and private housing policy. Interested in safe and supporting housing solutions for elderly with impaired function combined with welfare technology. 

Norwegian research institutions partners

Neuro-SysMed at the University of Bergen is a Centre for Excellence. The centre is recognized leader in clinical prediction of neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS, MS and dementia. Their work is based on analytics approaches to develop biomarkers. Neuro-SysMed invested heavily in a cloud-based analytics platform and extends the capability through including a broader set of sensor data.

Centre for Elderly and Nursing Home Medicine (SEFAS) at the University of Bergen is a recognised leader in validation of dementia care models, developed by i.e. COST-action TD1005 or trials on pain, behavioural disturbances and sleep, including multimorbid nursing home patients and home-dwelling people with dementia.

Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (BCEPS) at the University of Bergen is the leading R&D group on ethics and globalisation perspectives. The centre is supported by B & M Gates foundations and others. 

Mohn Nutrition Research Lab at the University of Bergen is a leading environment conducting studies on obesity and malnutrion using molecular, clinical and epidemiologic methods. 

Centre for Data Science (CEDAS) at the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen is one of the strongest information and communication technology departments in Norway. The centre has a particular focus on data science based on several large grants from European Research Council and the Royal College of Nursing.

SNF, Centre for applied research at the Norwegian School of Economics is one of Norway’s leading research environments on applied research in economics and business administration. The centre is dedicated to the task of initiating and undertaking contract research. 

Software Engineering at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.  The software engineering is a strong group with R&D and industry experience in healthcare and implementation. The group develops sustainable technologies in cooperation with society and industry.

 

International research institutions partners

University of Exeter is one of 12 elite universities in the UK. Professor Clive Ballard is Executive Dean at the Medical School. He has 15 years of dementia research experience at King’s College London and Director of the Alzheimer’s Association in UK. 

University of Leiden in the Netherlands is one of the leading international research institutions in Europe. Wilco Achterberg is professor of institutional care and elderly care medicine at Leiden. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Bergen. 

Yale University is one of the world’s most prestigiously universities and an Ivy League university in the US. Professor Heather Allore is Director of the Yale Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centre and Director and Director of the Yale Program on Aging Biostatistics Core. 

Harvard University is ranked number one in the world. McLean Hospital is a top-rated hospital, affiliated Harvard Medical School. Professor Ipsit Vahia is a Geriatric Psychiatrist at McLean Hospital and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. He oversees a clinical and research program on aging, behaviour, and technology and is also editor of the American Journal Geriatric Psychiatry. 

University of Tohoku is one of the best Asian universities to dominate the global ratings. Neuroscientist and Professor Ryuta Kawashima is Executive Director of Smart Aging Research Centre at the University of Tohoku. He will contribute together with Professor Rui Nouchi in the SFI BetterAge project. They will contribute with clinical and research expertise on brain mapping and brain training in older adults.
