In this seminar focus will be on our results targeting hypoxia (low oxygen tension) in breast cancers but also in the mandible area after radiation injury. Hypoxia is a common and critical trait in the microenvironment of solid tumors. It has been shown to be important for angiogenesis, cell survival, metabolism, epithelial to mesenchymal transition and resistance to therapy, and thus tumor growth and progression. We have a unique approach to target hypoxia in tumors by using hyperbaric oxygen treatments (HBOT). HBOT has no side effects, is well tolerated and commonly used worldwide for treating different hypoxic diseases as long as standard protocols are used. We have demonstrated arrest/attenuation of cancer growth in several different breast cancer models, a mesenchymal to epithelial transition (MET), less aggressive behavior and reduced metastasis after HBOT. Furthermore, a model we have developed for radiation injury in the rat mandibular area will be presented and the results obtained after HBOT discussed.
