Biosynthesis, bioactions and biomedical applications of the protectins

Hovedinnhold

Trond Vidar Hansen
Section of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmacy, University of Oslo

Endogenous w-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are enzymatically converted during inflammation-resolution processes to novel products named specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). The SPMs promote clearance of bacteria and apoptotic cells, down-regulate proinflammatory mediator production and stimulate the resolution of inflammation. Clinical trial development programs with SPMs are ongoing and SPMs have received attention as leads towards drug discovery.

The LIPCHEM group has conducted studies on natural occurring oxygenated PUFAs,1 their activation of BK channels (voltage-gated potassium channels conducting large amounts of K+ across the cell membrane),2 as well as studies on novel SPMs.3,4 Results from biosynthetic studies, bioactions and biomedical applications using SPMs of the protectin family will be presented.
