The gut microbiota is on everyone's lips and has been linked to all kinds of diseases. High blood pressure is no exception in this context. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for premature mortality from non-communicable diseases. A better understanding of the role of the microbiota and the mechanisms involved could open up new therapeutic options. In this context, nutrition (e.g. salt, dietary fibre) is increasingly coming into focus. After all, nutrition is one of the most potent modulators of the microbiome. Circulating metabolites of bacterial origin, which are formed from components of the diet, serve as important mediators between the microbiota and the host. Disturbances in this relationship can promote hypertension. On the other hand, influencing this axis could be an effective measure to improve the treatment of hypertension.
